Contains photographs of the following military units: 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment; 12th Special Forces Group. General description of the collection: The William R. Peers photograph collection consists of photos that cover only two years of Peers service. There are two basic subject areas - Vietnam and stateside visits to several military posts. In Vietnam, Peers was in attendance at an Army Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Dependent Housing Conference in 1969. Many of the photos show construction of the housing. Another group is of a visit of Nguyen Cao Ky and an official reception parade. There are 20 photos of Korea. The stateside photos cover visits to Birmingham, Alabama for the National Veterans Day 1969; a visit to Camp Drum in 1969 and a visit to the 12th Special Forces Group at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin in 1969.

Nguyen Cao Ky fought with the French forces that opposed the Vietnamese Liberation Movement. When Vietnam was partitioned in 1954, he joined the Vietnamese Air Force and became commander after the 1963 overthrow of Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1971 he failed to win an election against incumbent President Thieu, so he returned to the Air Force. He escaped from Vietnam in 1975 and settled in the United States. William Raymond Peers (b. June 14, 1914, Stuart, Iowa-d. Apr. 6, 1984), U.S. Army officer, was commissioned in the Army in 1938. During World War II, he was operations officer with the OSS in Burma; commander, Detachment 101; and deputy director, China Theater. After the War he served as an intelligence instructor at the Command and General Staff College and was director of CIA training.
